KVM Switch: Cost Efficient Solution for Managing Networks
Written by luecjennifer

Managing many computers and their associated peripherals is a hassle especially in case of a large network where several computers need to be managed on a daily basis and that too by one or two people. This situation can be eased by using a KVM Switch which allows control of two or more computers with a single set of peripheral devices. Providing proper utilization of space and better cable management, these switches are also popular since they support multiple platforms. Amongst various operating systems supported by these devices, the most common ones are SUN, IBM, HP, Dell, Windows Vista/2003/XP/2000, UNIX and MAC. These switches can be controlled using the button on the front of the unit or through the keyboard. Higher versions of these switches can also be controlled using IR remote control or RS232. Available in a wide range and variety, these switches differ in their functionality.

A latest model is the IP KVM switch, provides remote IP access with SSL v2/v3 Secured transmission. Ideal for any environment involving multiple computers where remote access is needed, these switches are becoming increasingly popular as they eliminate the distance limitation imposed by other models. Introduction of this device has made it possible for a person to control the computers under his network even when he is physically not present in that location. It allows secure remote access by using a 128 bit secure browser. Operating on the TCP/IP network, these devices are available in 8 and 16 port sizes.

The Rackmount versions are cascadable and can control up to 128 servers. Another version, the DVI KVM Switch (DVI stands for digital video interface). This hardware device allows a user to control multiple DVI based computers with a single keyboard, DVI video monitor and mouse. Supporting dual DVI Monitor/Flat panel displays with high resolution up to 1920 x 1440, these switches work on simple plug and play functionality. Built in a rugged metal enclosure, these switches are available both in PS2 as well as USB versions. A popular choice amongst users, the main feature of this device is the auto Scan Mode for monitoring all computers. Conference rooms, financial institutions, airports, server rooms, remote desktop applications, hotels, military and security establishments, government and commercial business are sectors where >KVM Switches are being used due to its flexibility and range of control.
