Video Matrix Switch: Display Information from Many Sources on One Display Unit or vice versa
Written by luecjennifer

Video from several different sources can be viewed on a several display devices using a Video Matrix Switch. Since a matrix like pattern of interconnection is created with many sources connected to many displays in any configuration, this device is referred to as a matrix switch. A single source can also be connected to all displays or all sources to a single display. The resultant signal clarity however is such that each display appears to be individually connected to the source as every output is buffered from every input. This matrix switcher can be classified into different models depending upon the type of video signal supported and the type of cables used to secure connections. Based on this, it is categorized into Composite, VGA, DVI, HDMI Matrix, Component, VGA AV and Cat5 Audio Video Matrix Switch.

A combination of a video splitter and switch in a single unit, this device is available in sizes ranging from 2x2, 2x4 to 16x16 and can also be daisy chained together to achieve even greater configurations. This device works on simple plug and play functionality and does not require any additional software or device drivers for operation. The biggest advantage of this device is that it eliminates the need for disconnecting and reconnecting the cables. The cables used for securing connections can either be standard UTP cables or normal VGA cables depending upon the model. All models of the Video Matrix Switcher offer multi platform support and work with operating systems such as Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux, Mac and Sun. The switching between various sources is done with the help of the push buttons on the front panel, RS232, Infra red remote control or via IP access.

The status of selected devices is reflected by LEDs and the OSD is used to control color, contrast, brightness, sharpness, level and gain adjustment. Some high end models are also available with optional audio. Certified by FCC, CE and RoHS, this switcher can distribute video and audio up to 1000 feet away over inexpensive Cat5 cable. These switches are hot pluggable and one can add or remove connected devices without powering down the computers or switch for maintenance. Available in both Rack mountable and desktop versions, the Video Matrix Switch is ideal for situations where information from many computers needs to be presented. It is mainly used in educational institutions, boardrooms, tradeshows and presentation facilities, digital signage applications and commercial establishments.
