The DVI extender is a hardware device that can be used with inexpensive Cat5 / Cat6 UTP cable, and transmits digital video signals up to 100 meters. This device, when used with fiber optic cable transmits the signals to greater distances. It consists of two units, a local transmitter placed next to the DVI source and a remote receiver placed next to the remote LCD monitor. The transmission is done while retaining perfectly clear and crisp video quality. These extenders are also available in 2, 4, and 8 port versions referred to as DVI Splitter Extender units. This unit allows you connect your local PC and also the local DVI monitor next to it, while the receiver units allow you to connect to each of the remote DVI monitors.

Another advantage is that it overcomes the distance restrictions which are associated with DVI cables. These units are CE, FCC and RoHS compliant. Some versions of these devices are available with audio receivers and used for multi media broadcasting thereby causing an increase in its demand.
