KVM Switch: Out of Band Solution for Multi Computer Management
Written by luecjennifer

A KVM Switch is designed to allow users to switch control between multiple PCs by using one set of keyboard, mouse and display. Abbreviation for Keyboard, Video & Mouse, KVM is a hardware device which controls multiple computers with just a touch of a button or through simple key strokes. Available in a variety of ranges, styles & functionality, these switches increase savings by eliminating the need for separate peripherals. Other advantages include saving physical space, reducing clutter and decreasing demands on electric power and cooling systems. They also increase productivity and allow for better time management. Another name given to this device is an out of band solution as it operates outside the main network. The distance between peripherals and the host computers depends on the type of connections used. While an IP KVM Switch allows control of peripherals from a remote location, the other types of switches require connections to be secured through cables.

The type of cable used again depends on the switch in question. The former switches are in great demand as they provide remote IP access with SSL v2/v3 Secured transmission. Eliminating the problem of distances, this switch allows a user to manage his entire network from any location just by using a 128 bit secure browser. Supporting high resolution up to 1920 x 1440 locally and 1600 x 1200 via IP, these devices are available in 8 as well as 16 port sizes. The number of ports determines the number of PC’s which can be controlled.

A 2 port KVM Switch is the simplest form of these switches as it allows access to two computers from a single console. In order to connect a larger number of computers, additional switches can also be cascaded. These devices provide multi platform support and can be used with Windows Vista/2003/XP/2000, Linux and UNIX operating systems. They are simple to install as they follow a principle of plug and play without the need for any software or device drivers. Hot pluggable, some higher end models of these switches include audio and microphone features. Equipped with the ability to control both PS2 as well as USB devices, this KVM Switch is used in areas where multiple computers need to be monitored and controlled by a single person thereby requiring only one set of peripherals.
