A keyboard, mouse and a monitor integrated into a rugged sliding drawer that is mounted into any server rack is called a Rackmount KVM Drawer. These units can fit into 1U or 2U of rack space and are so called space saving solutions for the server environment. Over time, as this hardware evolved, it became available with many options. The variations in the models gave them different names such as PS2, USB or SUN Rackmount keyboards. While the PS2 and USB variants differ in the peripherals they support, the SUN variant is compatible with SUN systems. This piece of hardware is also available with different type of video connections such as VGA, DVI, Composite RCA and BNC and S-Video. Compatible with a variety of systems, including Windows, SUN, Dell, UNIX, and Linux, the Rackmount Keyboard LCD is available with 17”, 19” or 20” monitors.

Designed with CE, FCC, TAA, and VCCI and optional RoHS certifications, these drawers support multiple keyboard languages. They have a unique, flip up design and slide rails which prevent movement of the keyboard while in use. The drawers are also lockable in order to secure the mouse and the keyboard. Both trackball and touch pad mouse styles are supported by these drawers. This KVM drawer can have 8, 16 or 32 port KVM switches integrated into the rear of the unit. Hot Pluggable, a user can add PCs or Remove Connected PCs for maintenance without powering down the PS/2 KVM switch or PCs. This KVM LCD drawer does not require any additional software for operation. The PC selection is simple and can be done using On Screen Display Manual, Push Buttons or Hot Keys. An important feature of this device is the auto scan mode which monitors servers at regular intervals ranging from 5 to 99 seconds. Eight character password protection and the ability to name servers up to 16 characters are some additional features.

Light in weight, these drawers also have built-in microprocessor emulation for each port boot up process. The rack mounting brackets available with this device are adjustable to accommodate different server rack sizes. The biggest advantage of this device is the elimination of separate monitors and keyboards thereby saving rack space. The Rackmount KVM drawer is a boon for network administrators as it helps them to control either a single or multiple PCs from a single location.
