A computer or KVM peripherals can be remotely controlled and monitored with the help of a KVM Extender. Consisting of a remote receiver and a transmitter unit, with the units themselves being connected via category cables, this device provides an affordable solution for remote access. While the transmitter unit directly draws power from the computer, the receiver needs to be powered externally. If the local and the remote units are connected via STP/UTP cables, a distance of 1000 feet between the peripherals and computer can be achieved. For longer distances, one can use the KVM over Fiber version. These extenders allow the flexibility of placing peripherals at any location with the computer being placed just where it is needed. Since the connections are secured via Cat5 cables, another name given to this hardware device is a CAT5 KVM Extender. These cables transmit both data as well as video over a single cable thereby reducing clutter and saving space. Other key features of this device are: plug and play functionality, hot pluggable, dual user access, automatic signal adjustment. Compatible with almost all operating systems such as DOS, Windows 2000, NT, ME, XP, Novell, Linux, HP UNIX, UNIX, QNX, SGI, FreeBSD, BeOS and Open VMS, these devices provide crisp and clear images at a resolution of 1920 x 1440 @ 60 MHz. These extenders also support VGA, SVGA, and Multisync monitors and follow the DDC; DDC2; DDC2B protocols. A more advanced version of the KVM extension device is the KVM USB Extender. Using this device one can access a computer with USB keyboard, mouse and VGA monitor placed at a remote distance. Equipped with regulatory approvals from FCC, CE and VCCI, this device is unique as it allows dual console operation. Not only can one control the computer from the local peripherals but they can also exercise control through remote keyboards and mice. These devices are perfect in terms of security as they are used in places where the computer is placed in a secure environment and where transactions on various points of operation take place remotely. All the above mentioned facts and benefits make the KVM Extender an essential hardware device in security and surveillance applications, digital signage networks along with banking, commercial and retails domains.
