HDMI extender stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface extender. It is a hardware device that allows you to extend video signals to long distances via inexpensive Cat5e / Cat6 UTP cables. These extenders were introduced to overcome the limitations of HDMI cable. They are light in weight and eliminate the need of bulky cables. Though video signals are extended over long distances, the images received are crisp and clear with high resolution. Available in different types, these extension devices are extensively used in call centers, airports, restaurants and military and commercial environments. A type of HDMI extension device, the HDMI Fiber Optic Extender is a hardware device used to transmit HDTV (High definition television) digital video signals to distances up to 300ft via fiber optic cables.

The extender supports single link PC of resolution up to 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 and HDTV resolution up to 1080p. Out of the various advantages of using these extenders, the most common ones are that these devices are resistant to RFI (Radio Frequency Interface) / EMI (Electromagnetic Interface) and allow the transmission of signals without any sort of loss or degradation. They also have the ability to switch to auto power save mode when the source device is powered off. Extensively used in digital signage applications in a variety of industries such as medical, airport, they can be used with Plasma TV’s, Digital Projectors, LCD Monitors, HDTV, etc.

HDMI Extender is very compact in size and require no settings, as it comes in a fully functional module. Operating on plug and play functionality, they are a substitute to HDMI cable, since they use inexpensive Cat5e / Cat6 cable to achieve long distance transmission. These extenders support HDMI or DVI inputs and are HDCP compliant. These devices are also equipped with the regulatory approvals from FCC & CE. The extender basically consists of two units, a local transmitter unit and a remote receiver unit. The local transmitter is placed next to the HDMI source and the remote receiver is placed next to the remote LCD monitor. If a user wishes to extend HDMI signals to long distances without distorting the images, the HDMI extender is the perfect choice.
