LED Screens 2009/03/31 04:23 Karma: 4
I was walking around JB HIFI on the weekend and noticed a very large screen 60" (I cannot recall what brand it was). The colour and sharpness of the screen was amazing. When I looked at the price tag around the $7,000 mark I noticed that it had LED TV screen. Now, I've never came across an LED TV screen before but I was very surprised. Basically, the first thing that comes to mind when the term LED is used, a large billboard pops in my head.

Does anyone know much about LED screens. What the advantages are over LCD screens. I've been told one of them is power.

LED screens are only a passing phase for new technology, tihs is why the market has not acceppted them to date. The new backlight LED is sure to gain sales with power saving etc

Thanks for the reply MPC. Are there any other advantages in using LED screens? I'm finding it hard to look for information about LED TV Screens online.

LED are less expensive for larger applications. e.g (80-120") though technology is not reliable.

Use LCD with the LED backlight for larger applications in the next 6-12 months for cost saving and larger scale digital signage applications especially coupled with sun light readable screens.

Today we received an email from Samsung promoting their latest LED screen. According to Samsumg their screen uses 40% less power than conventional LCD TVs. It is also free of mercury and lead (not sure what the benefits are but i'm sure it has something to do with the environment). It is ULTRA slim as well 1.2" depth. Can't wait until we trial one and conduct a product review.

LED displays work similarly to LCDs, except instead of having fluorescent bulbs there are many Light Emitting Diodes behind the screen. These LEDs require very little electricity, and ones that are not needed can be turned off.
Another huge advantage of LED TVs over both plasma TVs and LCD TVs is the amount of power it consumes. It uses up to 70% less power than the other systems which over the course of a year or a TVs lifetime can lead to huge savings. It's also important when you consider that as a whole we use up far too much energy and shortages could be possible in the future unless we do something about it.
The LEDs take up less space than the small fluorescent bulbs so the screens are noticeably thinner, and lighter. The modern technology and style of the LED TV certainly makes it an attractive option if budget allows, and it is one which is certainly worth pursuing.

When I was shopping for a TV about a year and a half ago I noticed a LED TV too. So I started asking questions about it. They ranged from a 46-60 inch. They are supposedly 6x brighter than a LCD TV and use 1/3 less power and last almost 2x as long as a LCD TV. Again this is what the sales person told me so Im not sure its the most accurate.
Thanks guys and have a great day!

Hello friends,
In technical terms this means that LED TVs being sold are actually TVs with LED lighting technology, which depending upon the mechanism can be backlit or edgelit. In backlit LED TVs there is a panel of LEDs just at the back side of main LCD screen which is programmed to produce less or more light depending upon the mechanism to enhance the image quality on the LCD screen. Edgelit TVs have a mechanism where LED's are installed on the edges which then point light onto the required areas on the screen. This also allows the LCD TVs to be made slimmer than before.

Thanks for sharing
